Abstract

An outline scheme is proposed for the appraisal of stability of abandoned mine workings in chalk, comprising a preliminary study, a practical appraisal and an evaluation. Those factors which define the pre-mining geological context are identified and their interaction discussed. A conceptual model for the potential deterioration of a mine is presented in terms of the processes which might occur. Outcomes, leading to some form of surface collapse, will depend on a measure of continuity of the various different constituent processes. Geographical information systems (GIS) are used for the evaluation. Their application is of particular benefit where an engineering classification scheme needs to be established.
