Summary

When designing rock retaining structures such as basement walls it is common practice to use a lateral ground pressure coefficient such as that derived for a granular soil. This paper derives a general rock pressure coefficient applicable to a jointed rock mass with potential plane or wedge failures in any direction and including the effect of surcharge and water pressure. Use of this rock pressure coefficient will in very many cases enable a more realistic and economical design to be adopted.
