Soundness tests using sodium sulphate and magnesium sulphate solutions on seven lithologies from the Carboniferous Limestone of the Bristol area are reported. The loss percentage from the two solutions is notably different. The factors which affect this variation are considered. The results stress the differing behaviour of the main limestone groups and indicate the danger of using the single word ‘limestone’ and assuming it has a single set of properties.
