Dr Felix Whitham died of a heart attack on the morning of Sunday 22nd November 2009. Felix had no formal training in geology and spent his career in the motor trade, becoming an apprentice engineer in 1936. He joined the Territorial Army in 1937 and was called up at the start of WWII, serving in the army as a mechanic for six and a half years. He escaped from Dunkirk and later served in the Middle East and North Africa, running a field workshop that repaired damaged lorries.
