S. F. Mitchell’s recent article (Mitchell 2000) provides a detailed stratigraphical section of the Welton Formation of the cliffs near Speeton and the author is to be congratulated in successfully tackling this particularly difficult section which has never before been measured in its entirety. His total measured thickness of 54.8 m is substantially less than the estimated c. 68 m which can be gleaned from previous accounts (notably Rowe 1904; Neale 1974).
