By 1989, I was starting to think about how to use my first period of sabbatical leave. In those days, I spent a lot of time with the Quaternary Geologists in Cambridge, and ate lunch regularly with Phil Gibbard, Richard Preece, and Rainer Grün. That year, we had a sabbatical visitor from Canada, John England from the University of Alberta, who had spent his entire career trying to work out the history of Quaternary glaciation and sea level change in the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. John joined us for lunch from time to time and we hit it off right away....
