My recollection is that, in 1981, Drake attended a workshop on igneous processes at the Stillwater (Montana, USA) layered intrusion. He came back saying that Ed Stolper (Caltech) had suggested that we add a silicate liquid to our Fe-Ni-S solid-metal/liquid-metal experiments. I immediately came up with several good reasons for why this would not be helpful. I think this was at least because I had no idea what experimental capsule to use.
