Science is about ideas, ideas about how the Earth works in our field, and how we evaluate ideas, but those ideas come from people. After all, God didn’t reveal the laws of motion to Newton from behind a burning bush – Newton guessed; more or less correctly, but he guessed nonetheless. Consequently, ideas have a history and I have tried to tell this story at least partly as an historical narrative.
