Every young scientist, who starts in a research field, builds her or his work on the experience of previous generations of scientists. We try to absorb the wisdom of those earlier generations, but with time we start to question the validity of their interpretations. Then we venture into new and unknown regions of the field, and over the years we may ourselves generate some valuable new understanding – for the young generations to absorb and to question.
