Controlling the emission of CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels is one of the major environmental problems of the 21st century (see Richter, 2011 for a recent review). Injection of CO 2 into the subsurface is an important strategy for disposal of CO2 derived from energy generation (Orr, 2009). The current plan is to inject the resulting waste streams containing CO2 (and often SOx and NOx and a number of heavy metals and metalloids) into deep saline aquifers in oil and gas producing sedimentary strata (Benson and Cole, 2008)...
