The leading German fossil dinoflagellate cyst researcher Hans Gocht passed away on the 24th of July 2014 during his 84th year. Hans had an outstanding career of over 40 years and made many breakthroughs, particularly in the field of dinoflagellate cyst morphology. He authored or co-authored around 50 publications, and was a modest, reserved and softly-spoken individual. His life was a remarkable one, especially for the tenacity he demonstrated in his rather unconventional transitions from artisan to laboratory technician and, finally, to mainstream science.
