Abstract
Monograptids collected from the Harpatnar beds (Silurian) in the Kashmir Himalayas include Monograptus cf. M. leintwardinensis and those of the M. colonus, M. dubius, M. uncinatus, and M. vulgaris types. The stratigraphically lower collections indicate an early Ludlow (Silurian) age, and the stratigraphically highest collection suggests a middle Ludlow age in the British standard. These monograptids in this sparsely fossiliferous and, heretofore, presumably graptolite-barren area distant from other graptolite-bearing terrain reveal that this region was indeed a site of deposition during late Silurian time and not a barrier to marine faunal communication as had been thought.
