It is a unique pleasure for me to acknowledge Michael Engel as the recipient of the 2008 Schuchert Award from the Paleontological Society. I have known Michael for at least 10 years. We have collaborated closely on several dozen papers and a major book, and during this time he has become my closest and most valued colleague.
