Alroy is correct. My error—and it was mine alone and not my coauthor's—can be traced to the following sentence in Alroy (2002):

“Maximum-likelihood estimates of q and r are simply the numbers of invalidations or revalidations divided by the sums across taxa of the number of years that they have been considered valid or invalid (Alroy 2002: p. 3707).”

...

I took “revalidation” to include the initial species description when, in plain English, it should not. Fortunately, the formulae in Solow and Benton (2010) are correct, indicating that my problem is only one of illiteracy.
