Insoluble carbonaceous substance (ICS) was extracted from debitumenized host black shales of the Sukhoi Log gold deposit. The ICS concentrates are of two groups: (1) light fraction, buoyant in water, platinum-free and containing a sericite-carbonaceous component (carbon, silicon, aluminum, and magnesium); (2) high-carbon fraction extracted by dissolution of the sericite-carbonaceous component and containing 42.2 to 91.78% carbon and 80 to 1500 ppm platinum. The presence of platinum in the ICS concentrates attests to strong bonds between platinum and carbon and their compounds which inhibit determination of precious metals in the ores of this kind by standard analytical techniques. Activation of carbonaceous substances by heating and acid treatment observed in experiments may be effectuated in nature as hydrothermal ore formation.
