Data on fluid components (H2O, CO2, CO, N2, H2, Ar, He, and hydrocarbons) in natural and synthetic cordierites are reviewed. New information corroborates the existence of two orientations of water and carbon dioxide molecules in cordierite channels. The experiments have also proved that hydrocarbons are present in the channels. It is shown that cordierite is a good material for sampling mineral-forming fluids.
