A downstepping system of denudation surfaces has been revealed by geomorphological mapping in the north of East Siberia. The identified steps are relics of pediment plains. These relics bear witness that during the Cenozoic the denudation basis discontinuously lowered from absolute elevations of above 200 m to the present level. Analysis of the location of these relic surfaces allows a reliable reconstruction of the post-Mesozoic evolution of the drainage network in the region.
