The goals of this review chapter are to summarize the effects of various salt solutions on 1) the mechanical strength of fluid-saturated calcium carbonate rocks and on 2) the nanoscale forces acting between calcite surfaces. Based on these data, we then explore the question of to what extent the salt solution-induced mechanical deformation of calcium carbonate rocks can be explained by the ion-specific changes to surface forces acting between calcite surfaces in aqueous salt solutions. The influence of ion-specific electrostatic or hydration forces on calcium carbonate rocks deformation has been highlighted but the relative importance of these effects remains unclear....
