This book is a collection of edited papers stemming from a workshop on Vesuvius and volcanism of the Campanian Plain. The workshop was organized by Bernardo De Vivo, and the results are an expressed effort by scientists from Italian institutions and foreign collaborators to tell the public exactly what is known and unknown about how a volcano works with the goal of avoiding problems that come about from oversimplifications and convenient but misleading models.
