This special issue of the American Mineralogist honors W. Gary Ernst, in recognition of his many original and influential contributions to the mineralogical sciences. Much of it derives from presentations made at the MSA-sponsored “Ernstfest,” in the single largest theme session that the Geological Society of America has ever hosted.
