Anhydrous glasses of jadeite + NaF and jadeite + cryolite compositions were quenched from melts at 1250 °C and 3.0–3.5 kbar. 19F to 27Al cross-polarization MAS-NMR experiments at a magnetic field of 8.45 T and single pulse 27Al MAS-NMR experiments at 14.1 T demonstrated the presence of [4]Al, [5]Al, and [6]Al in both glasses. The [5]Al is thought to be present in AlF2−5 complexes, a previously unknown species.
