Abstract
The nature of compositional fields in aikinite and krupkaite has been investigated by electron diffraction and high‐resolution transmission electron microscopy. Variation from ideal composition in these minerals results from the disordered intergrowth of krupkaite units in aikinite and of aikinite units in krupkaite. Disordered intergrowths of the wellordered superstructure phases suchas friedrichite with aikinite and krupkaite were also observed. Contrary to earlier findings, solid solution does not appear to be a mechanism for compositional variation in natural members of the bismuthinite-aikinite series.
