We have studied the Brazilian natural pink tourmaline through polarized optical absorption measurements. The effects of increasing doses of γ-rays from 60Co on the spectra were determined (maximum of 20 MGy). The following optical absorption bands were observed: 8500 and 14800 cm−1 assigned to d-d transitions of Fe2+ in b and c sites, respectively; 19500 and 25500 cm−1 assigned to 5E5A1 and 5B25A1, d-d transitions of Mn3+, respectively.
