Abstract

Gainesite, hypothetical end-member Na 2 Zr 2 [Be(PO 4 ) 4 ], a = 6.567(3), c = 17.119(5)angstrom, Z = 2, tetragonal, space group I4 1 /amd, is a new species from Newry, Oxford County, Maine. The color is delicate pale bluish lavender, hardness = 4 on Mohs' scale, luster vitreous, conchoidal fracture, specific gravity 2.94. The mineral occurs in small crevices in cleavelandite. R = 0.055 for 1072 independent reflections. Open framework structure.--Modified journal abstract.
