Yttrialite occurs in the Rode Ranch pegmatite as irregular, totally metamict, vitreous masses, dark olive green to brown in color, with thin laminations of tengerite. The specific gravity is 3.86, and n varies from 1.760 to 1.660. The calculated formula based on RE2Si2O7 is (Y1.116RE0.182Th0.190Mn0.101Ca0.068U0.034Fe+20.004Mg0.004) (Si1.924Fe+30.114) O7.087. Heating at 1000°C for one hour in air results in the crystallization of low temperature gamma-phase yttrialite.
