Violarite, FeNi2S4, a member of the spinel-sulfide groups, has a maximum thermal stability of 461 ± 3°C in the Fe-Ni-S system. Violarite solid solution extends toward more Ni-rich compositions at lower temperatures becoming complete with Ni3S4 at 356°C. The unit cell varies from 9.465 ± 0.003A for FeNi2S4 to 9.489 ± 0.003A for Ni3S4. It is likely that much hypogene violarite is formed by exsolution from initially deposited (Fe, Ni)1–xS monosulfide solid solution.
