Abstract

The effective magnetic moment of Fe2+ in monoclinic pyroxenes, orthorhombic pyroxenes, cordierite, amphibole, biotite, wolframite and sphalerite calculated from susceptibility data is found to be a variable with values spanning the theoretical range from 4.90 to 6.70 Bohr magnetons. Interpretation of this variability in terms of site symmetry is explored and found incomplete.
