Abstract
Twenty-five compounds within the composition field covered by the pyromorphite series were prepared by simple hydrous synthesis at 60-80° C. X-ray powder diffraction examination was used to record compositional differences and to examine the solid solution characteristics of the series. Contrary to the views expressed in modern texts, complete solid solution between the end members was found to exist. Cell dimensions for the pure compound Pb5(PO4)3Cl were found to be a = 9.987 Å, c = 7.330 Å; for Pb5(AsO4)3Cl a = 10.251 Å, c = 7.442 Å and for Pb5(VO4)3Cl a = 10.323 Å, c = 7.346 Å.
