Substitution of (OH)4 for SiO4 in certain zircons and thorites has been indicated by Frondel (1953) and in thorogummite and coffinite by Stieff et al. (1956). Collett and Frondel (1957) have synthesized zircon and thorite and, from the results of infra-red absorption spectra, concluded that this material contained (OH) groups; however, Mumpton and Roy (1961) in their experiments found no evidence in support of this substitution.
