Specific surface energy, γ, of quartz ami orthoclase was determined by the Obreimoff-Gilman method, in which the work of cleaving a single crystal is measured. The γ of quartz ranges from about 400 ergs/cm2 for (1011) and (1011) to about 1000 ergs/cm2 for (1010) and (1120). The γ measured for orthoclase is about 7800 ergs/cm2. The γ was calculated from elastic constants for a number of common minerals. The range is from 200 to 2000 ergs/cm2.
