Monazite was first synthesized by Radominski in 1875. His method consisted in fusing CePO4 in an excess of CeCl3. Recent syntheses have been reported. Mooney (1948) worked with powders of the rare earth phosphates whose method of preparation was not specified. Karkhana-vala (1956) produced CePO4 by heating Ce(NO3)3·4H2O and (NH4)2 HPO4 to about 200° C. The washed product when sintered at 700° C. gave the monoclinic dimorph of CePO4 corresponding to monazite. The size of crystals was not specified.
