Abstract

Tinzenite, described in 1923 as a new mineral of formula 2CaO·Mn₂O₃·Al₂O₃·4SiO₂, is shown by x-ray, chemical, physical, and optical data to be manganoan axinite. More than 5% B₂O₃ was overlooked in all of the previous seven analyses of tinzenite. The existence of such axinite with CaO content greatly lower than previously known shows that the formula of axinite, usually written HCa₂(Fe, Mn)Al₂BSi₄O₁₆, is better written H(Ca, Fe, Mn)₃ Al₂BSi₄O₁₆.
