Abstract

A chemical analysis of anligorite from Venezuela indicates the formula Mg7Si5O13(OH)8n H2O, rather than the formula for serpentine commonly given. X-ray diffraction data, thermal analysis data, optical and physical properties of the antigorite are given.

Field evidence indicates that, the chrysotile type of serpentine goes to antigorite under dynamothermal conditions slightly higher than the chlorite-biotite subfades of the greenschist facies. Tn the process chromite and magnetite are gradually resorbed and disappear leaving a rock composed entirely of antigorite.
