Abstract
Montmorillonite (including nontronite) probably varies in composition between the following end-member formulas: 4(Al, Fe)2O3· l6SiO2· 2OH2O, 6(Al, Fe)2O3· 12SiO2· 22H2O, 6MgO· 3 (Al, Fe)2O3· 12SiO2· 25H2O, and 6MgO· 2(Al, Fe)2O3· 14SiO2· 24H2O. These variations are shown on a (partial) triangular prism on which 52 analyses are plotted. The optical properties vary very little except with variations in the Al-Fe″′ series.
