In a first study of the chlorite system, published about ten years ago,1 the chief purpose of the writer was to show that it is possible to find a definite relationship between variations in composition and variations in optic properties in the system; to do this it was necessary to understand the mode of variation in composition (and this requires a knowledge of the end-member molecules), and to use a graphic method of correlation, involving four molecules.
