The status of castanite, a basic ferric sulfate with the formula Fe2O3·2SO3·8H2O, described from Sierra Gorda, Chile, by Da-rapsky1 in 1890 is still in doubt. E. S. Dana2 lists it as a distinct mineral, but Linck3 states that castanite, along with paposite and hohmannite, is undoubtedly a synonym of amarantite (Fe2O3·2SO3·7H2O).
