Rutile is a mineral whose importance in metamorphic petrology and geochemistry blossomed over the past decades due to its use as a tool for geochronology, thermobarometry, and trace element geo-chemistry, among others. Less well known is the participation of rutile in redox-sensitive processes, such as its growth during high-fO2 fluid infiltration in subducted slabs. This feature is highlighted by Guo et al. (2017, this issue), who track multiple populations of rutile growth across various P-T-fO2 conditions in the Dabie UHP Terrane, China.
