Eric James William Whittaker, distinguished crystallographer, mineralogist and geochemist, died on Thursday 2 July 2015 in Kidlington, Oxfordshire, after a short illness. Born on 1 November 1921, he attended Stockport Grammar School and Derby School, where he showed an early aptitude for mathematics and science, and then took his BA degree (1943) in Chemistry at Magdalen College Oxford during the Second World War.
