John Ashworth was a distinguished mineralogist and petrologist who served the Mineralogical Society as a member of Council in the 1980s and as Vice-President in 1988.

Born in Manchester and brought up in Derby, John attended Derby Grammar School from where he won entrance to Christ's College, Cambridge, to read Natural Sciences. He went on to obtain his doctorate at Cambridge University, in what was then the Department of Mineralogy and Petrology.
