It is a pleasure to introduce the recipient of the 2008 Max Hey Medal, Dr Diego Gatta of the University of Milan. Diego is a crystallographer whose main interests are in the field of high-pressure mineralogy. Although his main window into high-pressure behaviour is the diamond-anvil cell combined with X-ray diffraction, he has used a wide range of other techniques including neutron diffraction, vibrational spectroscopy and ultrasonics. While being led by scientific issues, he is also committed to the hands-on development of high-pressure methods – a combined approach that is the hallmark of a well rounded “at the coalface” scientist....
