This single-sheet, 8 miles to the inch (1:506,880) map reproduces, in the original hand colours, the four sheets of the 1840 third issue of John MacCulloch’s 4 miles to the inch (1:253,440) map of Scotland, first published posthumously in 1836. This was the first published complete map of the geology of Scotland, excluding the Orkneys and Shetland, but including the Western Isles, Rona and St Kilda, and complete with one N–S cross-section. This was an amazing 24-year long achievement by MacCulloch before railways and steamships made travelling less perilous and quicker, and the Ordnance Survey had not yet even started...
