Over the past 20 years coal production has become increasingly important in India. India is now the second most important coal producer in the world. However, knowledge of Indian coals internationally is relatively poor. This volume is timely in that it reviews the history of Indian coal research. However, the title of the volume is a little misleading in that the reader might assume it discussed recent research (over the last 10 or so years) but in fact mainly considers work published from the 1960s onwards.
