The first thing I should point out to the reader is that I have reviewed this book not as an expert in Cainozoic geology but as someone whose interest in the subject matter stems largely from a desire to understand the landscape of an area in which I live and work. I do, however, have a professional interest in understanding the origin, evolution and properties of the soils of the region, so that my perspective on this book is from two directions.
