Introducing students to the principles that govern the physical properties of crystalline materials is hampered by the lack of a good text book that covers the structure, dynamics and crystal physics of the solid state in a manner that is rigorous yet understandable to students without a strong background in either physics or mathematics. Thus many solid-state physics texts concentrate on electronic properties to the almost exclusion of atoms. Crystallography texts tend to concentrate on the principles and methods of diffraction from crystals to the exclusion of amorphous materials and the dynamics of crystals.
