Introducing students to the principles that govern the physical properties of crystalline materials is hampered by the lack of a good text book that covers the structure, dynamics and crystal physics of the solid state in a manner that is rigorous yet understandable to students without a strong background in either physics or mathematics. Thus many solid-state physics texts concentrate on electronic properties to the almost exclusion of atoms.
