The aim of this book is to promote an understanding of the macroscopic and microscopic properties of solid solutions in silicate and oxide systems, including the atomistic and structural controls on the solid solution. Whereas many textbooks provide in-depth discussions of thermodynamic mixing models, few discuss recent theoretical developments that are relevant to mineralogical problems and, to the best of this reviewer’s knowledge, no single volume exists in a format accessible to Earth scientists.
