This is the first of an interdisciplinary series on impact studies. The papers collected together in this volume resulted from a workshop, part of the European Science Foundation IMPACT program, held in Quillan, France, in September 1999. Aiming to draw together scientists from a range of disciplines, the authors have succeeded admirably: fields as diverse as organic geochemistry, palynology and impact physics are represented. There is a similar diversity in the impact events and geological boundaries that are studied –the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary event is the subject of only four out of the 13 papers in this volume.
