The asbestos problem has not gone away, yet. From its peak of production in the late 1970s of more than 5 m tonnes it still stands at >2 m tonnes (The Times, Sept 2001). These informative Proceedings of the Conference under the same title held in Montreal in September 1997 are therefore most welcome. Part 1 deals with amphibole asbestos, now eliminated as a product, and indicates that risks have been reduced by statutory limitation to exposure and by the overall long term development of mesothelioma, the peak of mesothelioma deaths being likely to occur before 2020.
