After a brief introduction to the physical properties of minerals and to the main rock groups, there are 228 pages each devoted to one mineral or rock, with a fact file, a photograph, and for minerals, the chemical formula. The minerals are, in general, well done, though they include the now disestablished variety hypersthene (in addition to enstatite); the formulae are welcome, but the significance of the comma in formulae such as (Mg,Fe)2SiO4 and in the more complex amphiboles...
