The book falls neatly into two sections: the first gives a standard optical theory background concerning light, polarization and the microscope, refractive index, and interaction of light and crystals. The presentation is succinctly and systematically presented in 28 pages. It proved well-structured for student use. A valuable two pages follow which explain cleavage, twinning, alteration, zoning, exsolution, inclusions, etc. concisely but in sufficient detail for beginners. The second section, of 71 pages, is devoted to systematic descriptions of the optical properties of minerals.
